POLS 1100 - U.S. National Government and Poltiics
This assignment was to write a research paper on one of several topics. The topic I chose was "America desperately needs a comprehensive energy policy to wean us off of fossil fuels. What should it be?" I chose this because I felt like I was very uninformed on this topic but I really wanted to learn more. I learned so much and I fully support the idea of a national renewable portfolio standard. |

This assignment was to explain the value of having and using basic quantitative skills to understand political discourse. I was happy that I am familiar with charts and tables and percentages and I use them frequently when trying to comprehend what is happening in America. I spend a lot of time looking at the changing numbers and statistics and I enjoy them. |

Reflection: I have always been pretty political so I felt like this would be a easy, breezy class for me. It turns out I had so much to learn. While I do have my political views the amount of things I learned about the history of our Country was immense. I am also taking a diversity class which discusses literature from early America. We had just discussed the Seneca Falls Convention and women's rights when we began to discuss it here. I am embarassed to say that before this semester I was not aware of Seneca Falls at all.
Reading the history in both classes and then some of the works by early feminist writers combined with the declaration made me so grateful to the women who were not afraid to stand up to what they knew was wrong. If everyone had chosen to just let things be where would I be today.
This class also gave me a great appreciation for President Kennedy. His inauguration speech gave me goosebumps. I'm only sad that our diversity class didn't make it to the 1960s. I would have loved to have had the writings to compare with the civil movements that were going on at that time.
